R&D Nester participated in the CIGRE Paris Session 2026, one of the leading international events for the power system community that brings together network operators, manufacturers, researchers and specialists to discuss the technological and sustainability challenges shaping the future electricity system.
Within CIGRE Study Committee C3 – Power System Sustainability and Environmental Performance, R&D Nester presented the paper “Harmonizing EPD and CBAM Methodologies for Carbon Footprinting of Power Transformers”.
The work addresses how environmental information already used in Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) can be structured and potentially reused for the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), while accounting for the important differences between the two frameworks in terms of system boundaries, reporting units and data requirements.
The proposed approach establishes a common and traceable data structure covering information such as mass and material composition, manufacturing energy consumption, process emissions and allocation rules.
This work is part of R&D Nester's activities on the carbon footprint of electrical equipment, which aims to improve the consistency and international comparability of carbon information and to understand how emerging regulatory requirements can affect electrical equipment manufacturers and grid operators.
R&D Nester also participated in the CIGRE Study Committee C5 – Electricity Markets and Regulation General Meeting, following discussions on current developments in electricity markets, regulatory frameworks and the activities of the Study Committee’s working groups.
This CIGRE Study Committee addresses the economic, regulatory and market-design aspects of power systems, including market structures, system operation, flexibility, ancillary services, integration of new market participants and the evolution of regulatory frameworks.
In addition, R&D Nester took part in the meeting of Working Group C5.38 – Certificates of Origin for Electricity in Power Markets. This working group takes a worldwide perspective on certificates of origin for electricity, comparing schemes used in different countries and examining how their regulatory frameworks, accreditation, market design and recognition influence renewable energy development, electricity markets and international trade.
R&D Nester also took part in the meeting of Working Group C5.39 – Regulatory Frameworks and Market Integration for Assets Under non-Firm Grid Connection.
This working group will investigate regulatory practices and market integration strategies for assets operating under non-firm grid connection, including renewable energy assets, battery storage, industrial loads, and generation systems, into the grid.
Non-firm grid connection may be associated with conditional curtailment in real-time or limited access during pre-determined grid congestion or instability periods.
Overall, R&D Nester’s participation in CIGRE Paris Session 2026 provided an important opportunity to share ongoing research, contribute to international technical discussions and strengthen collaboration within the CIGRE community.
The involvement in both Study Committees C3 and C5 reflects the multidisciplinary nature of R&D Nester’s work, covering sustainability, environmental performance, electricity markets and regulation, while supporting the development of knowledge and partnerships relevant to the future of power systems.
